Minnesota Republican Senator Denied Endorsement. Is It Because He Is Gay?

An interesting little story has been developing up in Senate District 12. The district, which extends from Brainerd to south of Little Falls, is represented by Senator Paul Koering (R)  but he is not going to be the endorsed Republican candidate for 2010. But on Saturday, party delegates picked Gazelka, a Baxter Republican who says Koering isn’t conservative enough on fiscal and social issues. Koering announced earlier this month that he would bypass the party endorsement and compete in a primary election on Aug. 10. While party challenges are not unheard of, the fact that Koering decided not to even attempt the endorsement raises questions about the Republican Party in Minnesota.
