Will Representative Banaian Rhetoric Match His Voting Record?

Representative King Banaian (R), in a radio interview with AM1240, sounds unwilling to govern by constitutional amendment: The Republican controlled House and Senate are considering putting a number of constitutional amendment questions on the November ballot.  However, Republican Representative King Banaian of St. Cloud is not so sure that’s a good idea. [emphasis mine] That sounds good but Banaian has already voted to govern by constitutional amendment once through the marriage discrimination amendment. We will have to wait and see if he really believes his own rhetoric or if he says one thing at home for his constituents and then votes another way at the Capitol. St. Cloud Times: “Amending Isn’t Governing”

Republicans are consistently reminding us that this country is a Republic and NOT a Democracy. They are right, of course, but the problem is they seem to not have any understanding of what it means to BE a Republic. In a Republic, we the people elect other citizens to represent us and make decisions on our behalf. Minnesota Republicans have chosen to abdicate that power and turn the state into a direct democracy. They have done so because governing in a Republic is hard and requires compromise while governing in a democracy is easy as you can simply pass all the difficult and complex issues of the day onto the people and claim no responsibility in their passage.
