Dear Representative Kiel (R): The Truth About Education Funding For Crookston Public Schools

This week I have been covering the lies and distortions being spread by some Republican legislators about education funding in their area schools. The problem with all the figures and percentages used by different groups is that they can be skewed by people like Representative Kiel to make it seem as though schools such as those in Crookston are going to be getting increases of around $323 per pupil unit. While she was later forced to apologize for misspeaking, we have yet to get to what actually is going to happen to places like Crookston. Representative Kiel (R) Forced To Apologize About Inaccurate School Funding Figures

Last week I wrote about an editorial in the Crookston Times by freshman Republican Representative Deb Kiel. In that editorial, Kiel listed many of the schools in her district and the increase in per pupil unit spending they would receive. Unfortunately, those figures appear to be wildly inaccurate and Representative Kiel was forced to apologize to her former colleagues on the Crookston School Board: Kiel wrote in her column, published in the Friday, Aug. 5 Times, that Crookston’s public schools would see an increase of $323 per pupil through 2013, raising total education funding formula dollars to $9,485 per pupil in Crookston.  She told the board Tuesday the actual per-pupil increase is smaller than that. “For sure you have $50 more per student,” she said. … Continue reading
