So Paul Ryan Sought Obama Stimulus & Argued For Bush Stimulus. Does Anybody Care?

A link came scrolling across my twitter this morning blaring, PAUL RYAN HYPOCRISY, with a story/video link from MSNBC show, Up With Chris Hayes. The video clearly shows Representative Paul Ryan, now Republican Vice Presidential candidate Paul Ryan, advocating for a government stimulus package which he now claims does not work: Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy The subsequent storyline is that Ryan, who also sought Obama stimulus dollars while claiming they didn’t work, is a hypocrite for doing so. My initial thought is probably similar to most Democrats who roll their eyes and see just another conservative hypocrite who claims to hate government but only when it is convenient for them. My second thought, however, is does anybody … Continue reading

St. Cloud Town Hall Photostream

I attended the SD 15 Townhall of area state legislators (Representative Steve Gottwalt, Representative King Banaian, and Senator John Pederson) this evening. While I have some analysis of the event coming soon, I also snapped some pictures and put them up on my flickr account as well as on a page in the menu bar above. Take a look while you wait patiently for the rundown of this event at which “constituencies” for government money were chastised but strangely enough one “constituency” was given every assurance that he would be fought for. Any guesses as to which one…

Dear Representative Fabian: The Truth About Education Funding For Thief River Falls Public Schools

This week I have been covering the lies and distortions being spread by some Republican legislators about education funding in their area schools. The problem with all the figures and percentages used by different groups is that they can be skewed by people like Representative Fabian to make it seem as though schools such as those in Thief River Falls are going to be getting increases of around $299 per pupil unit. While his colleague to the south, Representative Kiel, was later forced to apologize for misspeaking, the information put out by Fabian is still out there and has not been disputed. Therefore, we don’t actually know how the votes taken by Fabian and Kiel will affect places like Thief River Falls. The reality is … Continue reading

Dear Representative Kiel (R): The Truth About Education Funding For Crookston Public Schools

This week I have been covering the lies and distortions being spread by some Republican legislators about education funding in their area schools. The problem with all the figures and percentages used by different groups is that they can be skewed by people like Representative Kiel to make it seem as though schools such as those in Crookston are going to be getting increases of around $323 per pupil unit. While she was later forced to apologize for misspeaking, we have yet to get to what actually is going to happen to places like Crookston. The reality is this from the Minnesota Department of Education: Using these spreadsheets on Crookston & Thief River Falls Public Schools you can see that for Crookston state revenue only … Continue reading

Is Representative Fabian Using The Same Inflated PPU Education Figures As Representative Kiel?

In the last week, Representative Kiel (R) of Crookston was forced to apologize for an editorial she penned claiming that schools in the area would receive more money than they actually would. Now, her colleague to the north, Representative Fabian (R), appears to be using the same inflated funding figures. During a regularly scheduled  meeting of the Board of Education in Thief River Falls on Monday, Aug. 8, Rep. Dan Fabian reported that the Thief River Falls school district will receive an additional $299 per pupil through 2013, increasing total per pupil funding to $8,772. Kiel was forced to admit to the Crookston School Board that the real figure was perhaps only $50 per pupil unit. The move even earned Kiel a Jeer in the … Continue reading
