Republican Representative Announces Amendment He Voted FOR Is Really A “Non-Issue”
To hear conservatives talk about the anti-marriage amendment during the 2011 legislative session you might think it was the most pressing issue to be decided during that or any session. After hours of emotional debate, the amendment was passed and will be decided by voters on the 2012 general election ballot. Today, however, I noticed an interesting tweet from Representative Branden Petersen (R) who voted FOR the amendment. That issue that was so important during 2011 that we had to take time away from negotiating a budget is now a “non-issue“. It’s nice to see that the Republican Party acknowledges that their actions were a huge waste of time but I suspect that is little solace to the numerous families who will be affected by … Continue reading
MN Senate Republicans Keeping Dead Straight Spouses Safe From Dead Gay Spouses
Minnesota Senate Republicans who, in an amazing act of courage last year, kept our straight marriages safe from the scourge of gay marriages have once again come to the rescue of the straights. In the process of adding adult children to the list of people to whom health records of deceased patients could be shown, there was an attempt to include “domestic partners” with an amendment. You know what that means, right? First, it means that gay couples aren’t currently allowed to see the medical records of a deceased loved one. Second, it means that given the opportunity to allow gay couples to have this simple right, Minnesota Senate Republicans said NO. I am not sure how denying gay couples the right to see the … Continue reading

Will Representative Banaian Rhetoric Match His Voting Record?
Representative King Banaian (R), in a radio interview with AM1240, sounds unwilling to govern by constitutional amendment: The Republican controlled House and Senate are considering putting a number of constitutional amendment questions on the November ballot. However, Republican Representative King Banaian of St. Cloud is not so sure that’s a good idea. [emphasis mine] That sounds good but Banaian has already voted to govern by constitutional amendment once through the marriage discrimination amendment. We will have to wait and see if he really believes his own rhetoric or if he says one thing at home for his constituents and then votes another way at the Capitol. Unfortunately, in my experience with King, he talks a good game about helping his constituents but when action is … Continue reading

The @MNGOP Tweet Of The Day: MN Representative Calls Liberal Gays “The Gestapo”
Representative Mary Franson (R) retweeted this thoughtful article about the “liberal gay gestapo“: How nice, chastising the tactics of those you don’t agree with by putting them in the same category as the Nazi Secret Police. It sort of defeats your whole argument that your opponents tactics are uncalled for when you say they are the same as a group who rounded up people (including and especially gay people) and slaughtered them wholesale. Just saying…
Keith Ellison: Michele Bachmann Wants Women “Back In The Kitchen” And “Pregnant”
I have a fairly strict policy here at Outstate Politics of ignoring the various actions and antics of Representative Michele Bachmann. Partly because I would rather use my energies focusing on state politics but mostly because it seems a futile exercise to cover a woman over saturated in coverage anyway. However, I am going to make an exception here because it involves another member of the Minnesota delegation calling out Bachmann and her extremism. This week, Representative Ellison (D) attended a conference for an organization known as Campus Progress. This organization works for “progressive solutions” by getting young people involved in various forms of activism. Ellison delivered a speech about organizing both on and off campus and called these young people another generation of activists … Continue reading
